More on the fast growing Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae tree:  Green Giant (Thuja Plicata x Standishii.) Arborvitae, 1998 winner of The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Gold Medal Plant Award, grows to 40 feet with a broad pyramidal habit. Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae is a fast growing evergreen tree, aromatic, and is used for wind breaks, Christmas trees, or as a distinctive specimen. Its growth habits are similar to Leyland Cypress. Once established, expect about Green Giant Arborvitae to grow at least 3 feet per year. Thuja Green Giants do great in the South, but have a farther reach North than Leyland Cypress. Zone 5 - 8. They tend to bronze a bit in the winter, but green back beautifully in the Spring.

Landscape Architects are beginning to use fast growing Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae trees instead of Leyland Cypress because they are resistant to the fungus (Cerosporidium sequoiae) that is damaging Leylands.

NOTE:  Sometimes advertised height size of a plant is misleading.  A 3' plant is usually too small for a 1 gallon pot and is more than likely rootbound.  (Nurseries end up with plants too big for the pots they're in because of inventory that doesn't sell before the next growing season arrives.)  The roots of rootbound plants take longer to "break free" and begin growing.  Such plants tend to sit in the ground for months without much top growth.  It's much better to have plants where the roots have not totally filled the pots and are a bit loose.

In terms of maximum growth after planting, our recommended sizes of evergreen trees for their respective pots are:

liner: 6" - 14"
quarts: 12" - 18"
1 gallon: 18" - 26"
3 gallon: 26" - 36"

BEFORE DIGGING, call your local utilities to identify the location of any underground utilities.

These plants do not require a very big hole, but if your ground is hard, loosen it up as much as possible so the roots will have easy access to grow.
